Here, astronauts Cliff (Aaron Paul) and David (Josh Hartnett) are stationed in a vessel in space, but their almost-lookalike avatars live regular lives here on Earth. The longest episode of this season, Beyond the Sea, is also the loneliest one out of the lot. Joan is Awful is a strong start to this season. The episode’s plot feels extremely plausible with elements like deepfake and digital avatars. Every episode puts out all the details of her life for the world to see and the worst part is, she unknowingly gave her consent to this. Here, Joan (Annie Murphy), finds her life as a television show on a Netflix-like service, called Streamberry. The kind where technology has invaded our lives so deeply that it has become the demon that we were always told it would. The first episode of the season, Joan is Awful, is what we imagine a Black Mirror episode to be like. The last-minute twist is fairly predictable in the show’s universe and that’s perhaps what lets it down. When a demon named Gaap (Paapa Essiedu) presents her with this, you question if Nida’s mental health is starting to get affected, or even if the demon in her universe is real, is he lying to her? Nida comes across as a lamb who is being played by Gaap until her own demons start overpowering her. Nida (Anjana Vasan) is presented with the trolley problem – she has to kill three people to save the universe, and if she fails, the world will end. The idea here is that a human being, who has the potential of getting corrupted, will cross over to the other side as soon as they are nudged. Demon 79ĭemon 79 stands out in this batch of episodes as this one isn’t really about technology getting the better of humans. Even its end is pretty direct and is the kind that would be described as poetic in early 2000s Hollywood. As Bo is following Mazey’s trail, we see the actress transform into a werewolf and it is at this moment, the episode completely loses its grip on the audience. The visual language of the episode is fairly direct and unimaginative, which is why the twist makes you question if there’s a deeper meaning to this. But a big payday lures her back into the game and she starts following the lead for an actress named Mazey Day (Clara Rugaard), who has mysteriously gone into hiding after her erratic behaviour on set in Europe. Bo (Zazie Beetz) steps away from being a paparazzo after her photos lead to an actor’s suicide. Mazey Day begins with a lot of promise with its commentary on the privacy of celebrities, the cost of being famous, and the intrusive nature of the paparazzi during the early 2000s. Here are Black Mirror Season 6 episodes ranked from worst to best. The show is back with promise but of course, there are a few misses with the hits. Overall, Black Mirror Season 6 is miles ahead of the last season which had the audience wondering if the Charlie Brooker show had run its course. The other three episodes are set in the past but here too, the horror of humans is much greater than the horror of technology. The show has redefined itself with this season as two episodes out of five are a dig on Netflix itself - the platform the show streams on. The sixth season of the show is here and this time around, there are no warning signs, which is probably the show’s way of telling us that the future we were scared of, is already here. In the first five seasons, we were repeatedly told that technology is making humans worse so the idea of a happy ending in a Black Mirror episode seemed like a rarity. In its earlier years, Black Mirror was the show that was trying to warn us about the terrifying consequences of seemingly innocent technological advancements.
